Jeff Powell's Job Targets

At the moment I am not looking for a job, but I am practical enough to know that could change for any number of reasons. Thus, I keep this page around just in case you think you have exactly the job for me.

I am a generalist, so I tend to be interested in a lot of things. This list represents my current best thinking on the kinds of opportunities that most interest me. I know they are diverse, but so am I. The list is in no particular order.

tools development Configuration management tools, internal tools, etc.
system automation Many complex and manual processes are actually made up of steps that could be automated, freeing people to do more challenging and productive work, and avoiding human error at the same time. I strive to automate myself out of a job whenever possible.
Perl used for most any purpose CGI, utility development, etc.
software engineering tools Compilers, development environments, languages, etc.
embedded systems Some makers of embedded systems understand the costs of failure and inadequate testing. Almost every other software maker fails to understand those issues.
teaching UNIX, Perl, make, etc. I've lived in these tools a lot, and I like to teach.
management Yup... the evil 'M' word. I've done both people management, and a subset of project management. These can have their rewards. I'm not thrilled by the idea of living in MS-Project however.
contracting In any or all of the above areas.

If you think you have a job for me, please review my resume, career summary and job limits pages. If those don't rule it out, you can always contact me.
